Libraries Matter

CILIP in Scotland believes that Libraries Matter.

We campaigned under this banner in the lead up to the local government elections in May 2017 on behalf of Scotland’s school and public libraries.

The campaign seeked to influence candidates standing in local government elections and called on those who use or work in libraries to get involved in advocating the benefits and value our libraries deliver.

We asked candidates standing in the local government elections to pledge that, if elected, they will:

  1. Support our public libraries and the vital contribution they make to community cohesion, social and economic wellbeing, digital skills and literacy.
  2. Support professionally staffed school libraries and recognise their value to education and the raising attainment agenda.

We produced a handy guide to help people get involved.

Find out which parties featured libraries in their Manifestos.

There was also a fact sheet showing why it is vital that public and school libraries are supported and this will be getting sent to political parties and candidates in Scotland.

We produced a selection of case studies from a range of school and public libraries.

We also posted some guest blogs as part of the campaign and recieved great support for the campaign from a huge range of individuals and organisations.

Although the campaign is now at an end we will continue to do all we can to show that Libraries Matter – if you’d like to find out more about how you can help us do that then please e mail us at admin@cilips.org.uk
