Advocacy
Contribution to National Developments
CILIPS’s activity in lobbying and advocating for libraries and librarians has continued. Official responses have been submitted to consultations including:
- the Extension of Public Lending Right to books in non-book formats;
- Europeana;
- The Public Services Reform Bill;
- the Calman Consultation on the Future of Scottish Devolution;
- BIG Lottery funding proposals;
- the Scottish Government Literature Group;
- Copyright Futures: Looking Ahead, the Gowers Review of Intellectual Property;
- Digital Britain.
Support and help have also been given to the team carrying out research into school libraries and campaigning for school libraries on behalf of CILIP.
Following representations from CILIPS, SLIC, the School Library Association and others, the Curriculum for Excellence Literacy across Learning Principles and Practice now includes the following statement: "It is expected that the literacy experiences and outcomes, and this accompanying paper, will be read by a range of practitioners, including those who work in school library resource centres, who make an enormous contribution to the development of the literacy skills of children and young people."
CILIPS has developed a communications strategy and advocacy strategy to help clarify to members what our organisation seeks to do on their behalf. Support for individual members during the single status and job evaluation has continued to be given. Both CILIPS and the Scottish Library and Information Council expressed concern at changes proposed to library services as a result of the increasing financial pressures.
