Librarians Uncorked – CILIPS East and ELISA Reading Group

Branch: East Branch

Jun 28 2018

Date/Time: 5.30pm-7.30pm Thursday 28th June
Location: The Wash Bar, 11-13 N Bank St, Edinburgh EH1 2LP

A relaxed and peer-led reading group for library and information professionals is starting this summer with the aim of providing a supportive space for thinking and learning about opportunities and challenges within the LIS profession.

This will be the first ‘Librarians Uncorked’ Reading Group. Each session will be themed around an online article published within library and information services that debates a topic of mutual interest for colleagues active across the LIS community. The group will read the article and consider how we might apply the fresh perspectives gained from our discussion of it, in day-to-day practice.

The first reading group will look at ‘Accredited courses: debating the future challenges for LIS’ from CILIP Information Professional (November 2017). For this article, CILIP surveyed 10 CILIP-accredited course providers and published the responses on the relevance of postgraduate certification and potential of research to impact on government policy. The idea is to reflect on the article in the context of our own work, study and CPD experiences and critically engage with the themes raised – with the option to raise a glass in a friendly environment!

The group is open to suggestions and the sharing of reading material for future sessions is welcomed. Pitchers will be available at a bar but idea pitchers are also needed! It is a space for constructive debate and post-work socialising with colleagues equally willing to partake in measured drafts and share uncorked opinions.

Free. All welcome.
