Date: September 25th, 11am-12noon

Location: Online via Zoom

About the session: Amanda Minns, Head of Evidence at NHS Lanarkshire, will lead this session about Realistic Medicine and a health literacy project delivered in partnership with a high school.

The NHS Lanarkshire evidence team received funding from the Scottish Government to run a pilot project with St Margaret’s High School in Airdrie. The project used the results of a citizen’s jury (school visits to educate children about how to participate in shared decision-making by nurses or doctors) to develop a number of interactive lessons for school pupils. The lessons looked specifically at health information, the 5 questions of healthcare, and using quality online health information. The aim of the project was to:-

‘Increase the knowledge and confidence of young people to navigate the health service in person and online by using the 5 questions of Realistic Medicine as the foundation of conversations and for accessing high-quality online health information.’

Amanda will talk about what Realistic Medicine is and will also provide an outline of the project itself. She will then go on to talk about her role in relation to Realistic Medicine and it’s close links to health literacy.

This talk will be relevant to anyone who is interested in learning more about health literacy, Realistic Medicine, and also about collaborative working between two different library sectors. The project shows the skills and knowledge librarians can bring to a national programme and the relevance we can have outside our own departments.
