This free workshop led by Ania Matuszewska, a Systems Librarian at NHS Lanarkshire, will address issues around employability for information professionals. It will be relevant to librarians and information professionals in any area of the sector, and at any stage of their careers, including new professionals and those considering a move to a different part of the profession.

By looking at transferable skills and different competencies, Ania will encourage participants to consider a variety of job opportunities, not exclusively those based in libraries, and to explore possibilities for professional reinvention.

The workshop will include:

  • Ania sharing her personal experiences of having worked in a variety of different roles in the sector (and even in different countries!)
  • analysis of the skills and attributes that information professionals have, drawing on the CILIP Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB)
  • working in groups to reflect on a number of job descriptions from and beyond the sector (e.g. Learning Technologist, Learning and Teaching Librarian, Academic Skills Tutor, Research Support Officer)
  • mapping out the skills and competencies required for these jobs, considering why these are relevant, and discussing what specific skills and experience an information professional could offer in such roles

The workshop will be held in person (venue in Glasgow, TBC) if current Covid-19 restrictions make it safe to do so. Otherwise, it will be delivered online via Zoom, with a link sent out to participants closer to the time with information on how to join the session.
