The Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals Scotland (CILIPS) are delighted to be working in partnership to present their members with a series of webinars on the topic Facts for the Library Frontline.

Public services like libraries are often on the frontline when it comes to tackling the challenges presented by a lack of media and information literacy in communities, and recent research has shown that libraries are well placed to support their use communities but that staff are in need of additional training and support.

Details of the session:

In this session, CILIPS Digital Officer Leah Higgins will deliver a presentation which covers how librarians and information professionals can most effectively support young people in their engagement with information. Firstly, understanding the psychology behind information interactions for young people will help professionals to build a robust defense and conversational framework to empathetically guide their patrons to evidence-based, trusted information sources.

Using examples we’ll examine the gendered aspects of this conversation, how young women’s participation in democracy is threatened by mis/disinformation and how young men are vulnerable to the impacts of conspiracy thinking. With this in mind we’ll begin to examine some of the techniques and tools at your disposal to best understand and support meaningful and productive conversations with your younger patrons. You’ll leave the session with a library full of practical resources and recommendations that have been sourced from across the web.

This interactive session will take place from 2pm – 3.30pm on Wednesday the 14th October.
