“More than one way to burn a book?”: Culture wars, censorship, and neutrality in Scottish public libraries

“More than one way to burn a book?”: Culture wars, censorship, and neutrality in Scottish public libraries is a research project funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The research is being undertaken by Dr David McMenemy, Reader in Information Studies at the University of Glasgow (david.mcmenemy@glasgow.ac.uk) and Professor Steven Buchanan, Professor in Communications, Media and Culture at the University of Stirling (s.j.buchanan@stir.ac.uk), who are working in partnership with CILIPS to explore how current cultural conflicts and censorship arguments and challenges impact upon everyday library practices.

In gathering this information, we wish to ensure that the day-to-day experiences and opinions of library staff across all of the sectors in Scotland are captured to ensure the fullest possible overview of how censorship is impacting on libraries, library staff, and users.  We are therefore seeking responses across the sectors, not only from colleagues in public libraries, to get the fullest possible picture.

The data will be stored on the Qualtrics online survey system, which is a fully secure survey tool utilised by universities and other organisations across the world for survey and data gathering.

The survey should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete.  You are free to answer as many or as few of the questions as you wish.  You are also free to leave the survey at any point by closing the browser window. Data is not stored on the Qualtrics servers until you click the submit my responses button at the end of the survey.

The findings of the research will be presented at the CILIPS Annual Conference in June, and also via final report and other publications.

Thank you for considering completing this survey of library and information staff across Scotland.
