Introduction

Renfrewshire Libraries were delighted to receive CILIPS Green Libraries Scotland Grant Fund in 2023, enabling us to proudly launch our ‘Green Pages: Library workshops for a greener world’ programme. This initiative aimed to promote environmental sustainability and raise awareness about the circular economy principles across our communities.

Objectives

Our primary objective was to engage participants in hands-on activities focused on the principles of the circular economy — reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle. Through these activities, such as basic bicycle maintenance, sewing and repurposing textiles, and crafting seed bombs to enhance biodiversity, we aimed to promote environmental sustainability and awareness. Additionally, we sought to align with and raise awareness of Renfrewshire area’s target to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030.

By providing knowledge and skills in environmental conservation, we aimed to benefit both the community and the environment. These efforts aimed to further contribute to the post-COVID-19 recovery of our communities by fostering community engagement, improving health and well-being, and encouraging people to return to public spaces, including the welcome spaces in our libraries. They also helped to support people during the cost-of-living crisis, providing opportunities to learn practical skills which can benefit them economically.

Implementation

Over a three week period, free in-person workshops aimed at adults were held across Renfrewshire’s 12 public libraries. The workshops were delivered by local individuals or organisations who provide environmental education opportunities and gave participants the opportunity to learn practical skills while contributing to environmental conservation efforts. The relaxed and fun workshops fostered a sense of community and encouraged active participation.

Outcomes

Participants expressed their enjoyment of the workshops, highlighting the practicality and educational value of the sessions. Feedback included comments such as:

“Fabulous sewing workshop. Relaxed, informative, and superbly practical. Absolutely delighted at what I made/achieved.”

“Thank you very much for a lovely session. We learned how to make simple seed bombs which encourage wildlife into our gardens. All materials were provided, and instruction given. We also recycled old wallpaper into pockets into which the bombs could be gifted and designed our own wooden planting labels.”

“Excellent workshop! Fixed my bike, able to get out and about again. Thank you very much.”

By providing accessible information and engaging workshops for our communities, Renfrewshire Libraries are actively contributing to a greener future for the community and beyond.
