CILIP Scotland Statement

The CILIP Scotland Board would like to offer support to our colleagues at the American Library Association (ALA) and the wider sector following recent events affecting the profession. We share the concerns expressed in statements from the ALA President Cindy Hohl on the dismissals of Dr. Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, and Shira Perlmutter, Register of Copyrights.

Like our members all across Scotland, the CILIPS Board fully supports and adheres to the CILIP Ethical Framework. We are deeply troubled by any decision that could be a threat to these values, which include defending human rights, access to knowledge and freedom from censorship. Such action could severely damage much needed global progress on issues like artificial intelligence and intellectual property, as well as weakening vital institutional knowledge, preservation and professionalism.
