Information Literacy Group

Category: Blog

The following is a guest blog by Jacqueline Geekie, Aberdeenshire Libraries

I have been the Public Libraries Representative on the Information Literacy Group for 3 years now having originally applied for a bursary to attend the LILAC (Librarians’ Information Literacy Annual Conference) and was lucky enough to win.  While there they were actively recruiting a Public Libraries Representative and I was able to gain senior management support to apply for the role which has had real benefits for me and for my service.

There are 4 meetings a year and they are generally in London but with the wonders of Skype I am able to attend two virtually and two in person.

Being part of this group I have been able to attend LILAC; help to organise a Teachmeet between Academic Librarians and Public Library staff; respond to National reports; be part of the group revising the Information Literacy definition; attend CILIP conference representing the group; review LILAC papers; Chair LILAC sessions; be a Teentech judge and gain a whole host of new skills.

The group actively advocates for Information Literacy at a national level and they are keen to have membership of the group from a range of library sectors.  There are very few public librarians who are part of the group so come and join me!

What else does the group do? We provide bursaries for research of up to £10,000 for Information Literacy research. Look out for these funding opportunities.

The Journal of Information Literacy which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special edition with contributions from scholars and researchers in the field is published by the Information Literacy Group.

Finally we have our Information Literacy Website which has recently been relaunched.  We would particularly like to have case studies from Public and Special Libraries so get in touch if you would like to contribute.
