Are you looking for a way to celebrate reading for pleasure with the children and young people you work with? Maybe you’ve heard of the First Minister’s Reading Challenge and want to know more about how you can get involved as a library? Are you already involved with programmes like Bookbug and want to find out more about other Scottish Book Trust projects? Then why not join us on Tuesday 31st January for our free webinar on Read, Write, Count and the First Minister’s Reading Challenge for Public Libraries!

Libraries can play a key role in the delivery of both Read, Write, Count and the First Minister’s Reading Challenge, two programmes which focus on supporting children and young people aged 5 – 18 become confident and engaged readers and writers.

Read, Write, Count is a national campaign to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of Scotland’s children. As part of the campaign, every child in Primary 2-3 receives a free bag with books and activities to support their learning. It aims to build parents’ confidence, and encourage families to include easy and fun reading, writing and counting activities in their everyday lives. In this webinar, we’ll be sharing more about what you can expect to find in this year’s bags, including free resources and activity ideas to try in your library setting.

Since 2016, the First Minister’s Reading Challenge has been encouraging children to develop a love of reading for pleasure in classrooms, libraries and community groups across the country. Supported by a collection of free resources, adaptable materials and funding opportunities for author visits, libraries can celebrate children’s’ reading journeys and the benefits of reading for pleasure through the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. Participating libraries can also be part of our annual national Celebration Event in June, where you can find out more about all the fantastic Challenges taking part across the country!

Classes can also complete their Reading Challenge as part of our national Reading Schools programme. In this session, we’ll be sharing how libraries can connect with their local Reading School to deliver the Reading Challenge in partnership, building relationships and enhancing reading cultures across the community.

If you’d like to find out more, join us on Tuesday 31st January 2023 at 4:30pm for our webinar on how libraries can get involved with Read, Write, Count and the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. Book your free place on Eventbrite and get ready to get inspired!
